Of all the reasons I chose Thailand as my traveling destination, their reputation for spectacular beaches was at the top. Nothing soothes the mind quite like calmly walking along a white beach lined with palm trees as warm ocean water splashes gently against your feet. This is the paradise I wanted to find in Thailand – and I did. Of all the beaches I saw, these are the top three:
1. Koh Phi Phi Leh, Maya Bay – Okay, this beach is so beautiful that they decided to film “The Beach” here! Honestly, it’s the most beautiful beach I have seen in my entire life. Although it gets pretty busy with tourists, you must see it’s beauty! To get there, you’ll have to take a long tail boat from Koh Phi Phi Don (the main island). I paid 450 baht for a day long snorkeling trip which included about an hour at Maya bay. Make sure you go in through the “back entrance” from Loh Samah Bay – it’s more of an adventure that way!
2. Koh Lipe, Pattaya Beach – Koh Lipe is quite far from Bangkok. To get there, I had to take an overnight bus to Hat Yai, a mini bus to the port, and then a speedboat for a 60KM ride from the coast. All in all, the trip took about a day and a half – but it was worth it! Koh Lipe is so small that you can walk from one end to the other in about half an hour so take some time to check out Sunrise and Sunset beach as well. There was convenient snorkeling just off Pattaya beach, where I was staying. You can rent a snorkel and mask at the beach if you choose to check it out.
3. Koh Lanta, Long Beach -The advantage that Koh Lanta has over the other two is that it’s bigger, and therefore less dense. The beaches aren’t as crowded and they are looooong – so you can take a run in the morning or take your sweetheart for a romantic walk. My friends and I spent a lot of time reading and tanning on long beach, just twenty feet away from the resort we stayed at (called Sanctuary – seen in the video). Getting to Koh Lanta involved a couple ferries and a few mini buses – all of which can be arranged by a travel agent.
