SpamAssassin: Can’t find spam folder in SquirrelMail

Filed under: Technology, Troubleshooting by: brennan

I’ve been using SquirrelMail to access my webmail for a couple of years now.  Over the past year, the number of spam messages I receive has been increasing steadily.

In an attempt to cut down on the number of spam messages entering my inbox, I enabled SpamAssasin from my Bluehost cPanel.

When I enabled SpamAssassin, it told me that a “spam” box was created and that “SpamBox will deliver any emails identified as spam by SpamAssassin into a separate mail folder named ’spam’”.

So, after enabling SpamAssassin, I logged back into SquirrelMail and looked through my list of folders for one named “spam”. I couldn’t find it.

Bluehost offers, by default, three mail clients to access your webmail: horde, SquirrelMail, and roundcube. The only client that “saw” the spam folder was horde. The spam folder was not visible in the either SquirrelMail or roundcube.

After searching Google and tinkering around for a while, I finally checked the “Folders” section of SquirrelMail. At the bottom is a heading called “Subscribe/Unsubscribe”. The spam folder was in the “Subscribe” box.

After highlighting the spam folder and clicking the subscribe button, I was then able to see the spam folder and browse through its contents using SquirrelMail.
