Life Wandering

This video is a rather abstract creation that involved a lot of experimentation with Windows Movie Maker.

One day I accidentally locked my keys in my car and had to wander around while I waited for a spare key to arrive. I ended up in the local park that was stunningly beautiful. I decided to come back later and film it. This is a result of my work including some shots of myself “wandering” through town.

I figured that a lot of people drive by this park every day without appreciating its serenity and beauty. Due to our hectic lives, we miss out on experiencing a lot of natural beauty every day of our lives. We get so caught up in our habits and daily routine that we forget to explore the world around us.

I think that wandering can be both a good and bad thing. Sometimes we need to “wander” to discover what’s right for us in life. That can mean travelling, meeting new people, and experiencing new things. But we can also get ourselves into “mindless wandering” where we spend our days just looking for things to keep us busy (like TV, work, shopping, etc). We need to be conscious of where we are heading in life and every day we have to wake up with the intention that we will take action to move our lives in the direction we want them to go.

If we continue to follow the same predictable path, day in and day out, we severely limit our exposure to new and exciting opportunities. We can’t expect our happiness to increase if we don’t explore the other options available to us.

If you don’t decide what you want in life then others will tell you should want and you’ll end up seeking that by default. You’ll spend your days wandering through the streets, sidewalks, and office buildings living on an “autopilot” that someone else has programmed. Allow yourself to wander constructively – to discover yourself and find out what you are attracted to. However, avoid destructive wandering that hinders your free thought and creativity.
