Cannot Install Windows Live Messenger On XP Pro SP3

Filed under: Technology, Troubleshooting by: brennan

Problem:

Completed a fresh install of Windows XP Pro and installed Service Pack 3. Downloaded the latest version of Microsoft Live Messenger from get.live.com. When running the installation, each component fails saying “not installed” with a red “X” beside it.

Clearing temporary files doesn’t work. Neither does removing the installer from add/remove programs.

Solution:

Click Start, select Run, and type in “regsvr32 wups2.dll”

Try installing again.
