Discovering Your Inner Drive…

What separates the great from the mediocre? If we were to compare a successful entrepreneur with a homeless man what differences in character would we discover? I would presume that the businessman has a positive outlook on life and is very ambitious. The poor man is probably bitter and feels helpless. So did the businessman choose to be successful? And did the homeless man choose to be poor? The question really is, do circumstances control the outcome of a person’s life or is the outcome solely determined by the person’s attitude? If Bill Gates wasn’t graced with the circumstances that were present at the time of his success, would he be as rich and powerful as he is today? Would he have continued his pursuit or would he have given up if faced with more unfavorable circumstances?

There are a few people who have a burning desire, a passion, within them. These people yearn to make a difference in the world or create something of great significance. Their goal may be to achieve wealth, fame, or to help other people. Whatever their goal may be, they stop at nothing to achieve it. They stride forward past self doubt, criticism, failure, and loss. They are invincible in a sense. Many people are held back by self doubt or they give up when faced with failure and loss. So why is it that some people just keep going, moving in the direction of their desire?

Is that burning desire a choice or are some people just born with it?

I believe, to some extent, in the concept of fate. We are all destined, to some degree, to do what we do. In order for civilization to function properly we need leaders and followers. Could you imagine a world where everyone has the same level of motivation as Steve Jobs or Donald Trump? Everyone would be coming up with new ideas and doing things their own way. They would bump heads and nothing major would ever be accomplished because no one would follow. I tend to believe that, by design, human kind is composed of a majority of followers who possess little, if any, inner drive. Most people are happy (well not happy, maybe content and satisfied) to find a good home and raise a family. They do not “think big” or visualize a creation of theirs having a major impact on society. Or maybe they do think of something great, but since they do not understand how their vision could become a reality, they simply ignore it. Their self doubt and fear prevent them from leaping forward toward the physical creation of their idea.

So how do you determine if you are one of the few blessed (or cursed) with this burning desire? Well, first of all, take a moment to examine your past. Have you ever attempted to achieve big things of your own accord? Have you always had a desire that perhaps you’ve tried to suppress, but it won’t go away? You have to look inside yourself for the answer. Once you think you have it, the only way to truly find out is to try.
