Create A Windows Boot CD With Disk Imaging Utilities
It’s wise to create complete a copy of your hard drive after a successful installation of your operating system and applications. That way, if you ever have to re-install your operating system again, you can just backup your data and copy the image over to your hard drive.
To do this, you could pay big bucks for a utility like Norton Ghost. But isn’t it nice that some people take the time and energy to put together a free utility to do just about the same thing. The two pieces of free software you’ll require to create this boot CD are called BartPE and DriveImage. I won’t lie, it is not a super easy process. It requires some reading and careful following of instructions to get it right.
The folks at DriveImage have actually created a tutorial on YouTube that shows you step by step how to create a BartPE boot disk with the DriveImage plugin added.
The two snags I ran into were:
1. I forget to copy the XP SP2 source files from my install CD to a folder on my hard drive. So make sure you do that first as it simplifies the process.
2. The other problem I had is that the first BartPE boot disk I created wouldn’t recognize my SATA hard drive in my Compaq laptop. The reason for that is I didn’t have the DriverPack plugin installed that includes all the drivers required to read those types of hard drives. Just follow the instructions here and here to create a DriverPack plugin for your BartPE boot CD.
